Cross-border

payment service model

In August 2007, Alipay was the first third-party online payment platform to offer a cross-border online payment solution. The payment solution allows China's largest and most active online shopper group to use the Renminbi to purchase goods priced in foreign currencies from overseas partner merchant websites. Similarly, the cross-border payment solution also enables online merchants around the world, through cooperation with Alipay, to overcome the bottleneck of cross-border payment, so as to rapidly tap commercial opportunities in China's massive consumer market.

Alipay offers a real-time payment solution for international payment. When a buyer pays in Renminbi for a purchase from an international e-commerce website, Alipay will withdraw the payment from the buyer's account in real-time, use the funds to purchase foreign currency, and will then remit the sum to the international merchant's account in settlement.
